The competition to design the Unterland II campus in Ruggell offered a golden opportunity to build a school complex on a virtually untouched site, filling it with future life and activity. The primary goal of our proposal was to create an architectural backbone with plenty of room for future changes and expansions, allowing each school to respond flexibly to new pedagogical concepts or social developments. Positioned in the center of the lot, the new complex consists of several pavilion-style structures. Together, these form an ensemble of buildings that are connected both spatially and functionally along a central axis. The facilities belonging to each school (a secondary school and a postsecondary vocational school) are thus united within an overarching three-dimensional framework. At the same time, each school stands out clearly as a distinct structure and location.
In keeping with the composition and placement of the pavilions, the design pursues a concept of interweaving landscape and architecture. Multifunctional nature-oriented outdoor spaces extend to the building’s edges and blend seamlessly into one another. The economical use of the available space creates land reserves that allow additional buildings to be placed along the “rue intérieure” as needed.

Ausgehend von der Komposition und Setzung der Pavillonbauten verfolgt der Entwurf die Idee einer engen Verflechtung von Landschaft und Architektur. Naturnahe und vielfältige Aussenräume gehen nahtlos ineinander über und werden bis an die Schulgebäude herangeführt. Der haushälterische Umgang mit dem Boden und die daraus entstehenden Landreserven erlauben bei Bedarf weitere Ergänzungsbauten entlang der «Rue Intérieure» zu platzieren.
